Prizes at The Whit Friday March Contests 2016

Despite very heavy rainfall, Skelmanthorpe Prospect Brass arrived at the brass band contest that takes place every year during the afternoon and evening of Whit Friday, The Saddleworth & District Whit Friday Contest.

Each village which took part part in the Whit Friday Contests hosted its own open air competition and on arrival at the first contest village, Skelmanthorpe Prospect Brass registered and was given an order of play number. When its number was called, the band formed up and marched down
to – whilst playing J. A. Greenwood’s, True And Trusty – the contest arena.

Here the band played John R. Carr’s march Bramwyn before assembling back on the coach ready for the drive to the next village where the whole process was repeated.

Each village offers prize money for specific brass band sections. Skelmanthorpe Prospect Brass competed for the prize of ‘Best 2nd Section Band’ in eight villages and achieved victory in five:
Stalybridge Celtic, Audenshaw, Droylesden, Heyroyd and Denton.

A huge thank you goes to Chris Clegg on Euphonium for his help during rehearsals and his contribution to such an exceptional result on the day. Thanks also go to the band’s runners, Michael Rock and Oliver Booth.
