Shanties in Shepley with Kimber’s Men

In May 2016, The Skelmanthorpe Band and traditional seasong and shanty singers, Kimber’s Men once more came together, this time playing the Main Stage Closing Concert at the Shepley Spring Festival.

The three-day annual event, voted ‘Village Festival of the Year’ in 2012, is held in Shepley Village, just a few minutes drive from Skelmanthorpe and celebrates the best of traditional music, song and dance, including
concerts, ceilidhs, morris dancing, music and song sessions, workshops and children’s activities.

Pieces performed on the night included new works such as I Will Always Be There and old favourites including Shenandoah (soloist, John Bromley), Don’t Take The Heroes and the Mingulay Boat Song.

On leaving the festival, one member of the audience was overheard saying, ‘I really enjoyed the concert tonight. That was the second time I’ve seen Kimber’s Men and the band together. I hope it happens again soon’. A spokesperson for Kimber’s men added, ‘we’re so lucky to be able to perform
with Skelmanthorpe band’.
