Bolsover Success

Skelmanthorpe Band were very pleased to take second place at the recent Bolsover Festival of Brass. This is an incredibly popular entertainment contest which is live-streamed over the internet, this year reaching audiences in thirty-two countries and over three-hundred and sixty towns and cities across the UK.

Competing Dan-Bolsoverin the First Section, the band programme kicked off with Glory Fanfare, followed by the Swedish Hymn (better known as How Great Thou Art), featuring Becky Abernethy (flugel) and Laura Brown (solo horn). Solo euphonium player Dan Jackson delivered a polished performance of Carnival Cocktail which won him the soloist prize in what was described as a “great show”. Don’t Stop Me Know, the very popular Queen number, gave the band a chance to show off their vocal skills in a performance that adjudicator Thomas Wyss described as energetic, stylish and full of commitment. The selection was rounded off with the finale from Edward Gregson’s Dances and Arias.

Thomas Wyss summed up his comments on the performance as “a very enjoyable programme, well put together. Super ensemble playing by all, great euph soloist. A technical display indeed”
