YHBBA Annual Contest 2016

The Yorkshire and Humberside Brass Band Association is always looking at ways to promote brass music in Yorkshire and Humberside and with just seven bands competing in 2015, organisers this year were thrilled by the number of entrants (19 bands over two sections) competing at this year’s Contest in Holmfirth on Sunday 8th November 2016.

Prospect Brass members’ spirits were in no way dampened by the afternoon’s sporadic, torrential rainstorms and set about impressing the adjudicator for Group ‘A’, Alan Morrison with their interpretation of Paul Sharman’s test piece, Inclusion.

According to Mr. Morrison, Prospect Brass’ performance had ‘Much to admire with a piece that showed the band’s strengths – changing mood effectively’.

Unfortunately for Prospect Brass, the ‘Best Second Section Band’ trophy went to national champions, Stannington, who in January 2017 gained promotion to the first section. The final top six places overall went to Hade Edge, Drighlington, Elland Silver, Stannington and Westoe Brass with a tie between Skelmanthorpe Prospect Brass and Horbury Victoria for sixth place.

Organiser, Peggy Tomlinson thanked the bands, their followers and the audience for their support saying, ‘I’ve enjoyed a full day of excellent competition. It is most encouraging for those involved in the Association to continue their efforts in getting this event established in the banding calendar’.

It was announced on the day that next year’s contest will be held on Sunday the 5th November 2017.
